Choosing the Right Books for UPSC Prelims

Book selection can make or break your UPSC preparation. Too many books lead to confusion, while too few leave gaps. Here is a carefully curated list based on toppers' recommendations and expert analysis.

Indian History

  • Ancient India: NCERT Class 11 (RS Sharma) for basics. Tamil Nadu Board textbooks for additional details.
  • Medieval India: NCERT Class 11 (Satish Chandra) covers the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal period comprehensively.
  • Modern India: Spectrum's A Brief History of Modern India by Rajiv Ahir. This single book covers the entire freedom struggle and is sufficient for Prelims.
  • Art & Culture: Nitin Singhania's Indian Art and Culture. Concise and exam-oriented.

Indian Polity

M. Laxmikanth's Indian Polity is the undisputed choice. Read it at least twice. Supplement with current constitutional developments from newspapers. For Prelims, Laxmikanth alone is more than sufficient.

Geography

  • NCERT Class 6-12 Geography textbooks (all of them)
  • G.C. Leong's Certificate Physical and Human Geography for world geography
  • Majid Husain's Geography of India for Indian geography specifics

Economy

Ramesh Singh's Indian Economy for comprehensive coverage. Supplement with Economic Survey summary and Budget highlights. For basics, NCERT Class 11-12 Economics textbooks are essential.

Science & Environment

  • NCERT Class 6-10 Science textbooks for basics
  • Shankar IAS Environment book for environment and ecology
  • Science Reporter magazine for current science developments

Current Affairs

Monthly magazines like Vision IAS or Insights are sufficient. Do not overload with multiple sources. One good monthly compilation plus daily newspaper reading covers current affairs adequately for Prelims.
