Railway Recruitment Board Exams
Indian Railways is one of the largest employers in the world. RRB conducts multiple exams including NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories), Group D, and ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot). These exams offer excellent job security and benefits.
RRB NTPC Exam Pattern
NTPC has two CBT stages. CBT-1 has 100 questions (Mathematics, General Intelligence, General Awareness) in 90 minutes. CBT-2 has 120 questions in 90 minutes with the same subjects but higher difficulty. Negative marking is 1/3 for each wrong answer.
Subject-wise Preparation
- Mathematics: Focus on Number System, Percentage, Ratio, Time-Speed-Distance, and Mensuration. Railway maths is moderate difficulty - master basics and practice speed. NCERT Class 9-10 maths is sufficient for concepts.
- General Intelligence & Reasoning: Practice Analogies, Classification, Series, Coding-Decoding, and Blood Relations. These are scoring topics with predictable patterns.
- General Awareness: This is the differentiator in Railway exams. Cover Indian History, Geography, Polity, General Science, and Current Affairs. Railway-specific questions about Indian Railways history and facts are common.
Best Books for Railway Exams
Use R.S. Aggarwal for Maths and Reasoning. Lucent's GK for General Awareness. For current affairs, follow monthly magazines like Pratiyogita Darpan. Previous year papers are gold - solve at least 5 years' worth.
Group D Specific Tips
RRB Group D is relatively easier but extremely competitive due to high applicant numbers. Focus on General Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology basics), Elementary Mathematics, and Current Affairs. Speed is crucial as the exam has 100 questions in 90 minutes.
Study Timeline
A 3-4 month dedicated preparation is sufficient for Railway exams. Spend the first month on concepts, second month on practice, and remaining time on mocks and revision. Take at least 30 full-length mock tests before the exam.
